"...but never name your homepage something like hompage.htm ..."

This can actually be accomplished through the us of your .htaccess file. Simply whip it out, or if it doesn't exist, take a blank text document and rename it ".htaccess" (notice the period at the beginning).

Now, to get your homepage to be anything you want, you just need to type:
DirectoryIndex homepage.html

Likewise, "homepage.html" can be replaced with anything.

The only reason why index.html, index.htm, index.php, index.cgi, etc... are recognized by the server, is because it is set to do so in the httpd.conf of the apache configuration with the same directive outlined above. By using the .htacess file, you are essentially overriding that setting.

Also, you are correct in saying that most users only need about 5GB of web space, however when you said this "..some huge number like 1,000GB of space." You're implying that it is actually possible.

In the web hosting industry, this is referred to as overselling, and it should be avoided. Basically the web hosts are offering you more resources that they can actually provide, in order to appeal to you. As a cause, if you take a look in their 'Terms of Service", they have things you CAN and CAN'T do with their hosting.

All-in-all, you've written a very informative article. Feel free to drop me an email if you have any questions ;). Being a Web Host myself, I'd love to get into detail with anything!
